We were founded in 1983 and have been affiliated to the Association of Irish Musical Societies since 1984. Having started very small we quickly established ourselves as one of the most successful societies in the country, being nominated for numerous awards at the AIMS annual Award ceremonies, and with several of our members being outright winners, notably Marie Cusack, from Loughbollard, who has won Best Set Designer and Best Stage Manager on a number of occasions.
We stage our annual musical in March each year, with rehearsals starting at the beginning of October in the previous year. In our 22 years we have only twice needed to ask non-members to take leading parts and those were in emergency situations. Our members are not only from Clane but from surrounding villages and towns in Kildare and a few travel from Dublin because they enjoy the atmosphere and friendships made within the society.
Five years ago we decided to stage our first play – John B. Keane's Many Young Men of Twenty. The production was very successful and we have staged a play ever autumn since – this year's production of Death of a Salesman was staged in The Moat Theatre in Naas and was a resounding success. It may be repeated in May 2006, due to popular demand.
Currently we are in rehearsal for the ever popular My Fair Lady which will be staged in The Abbey, Clane from the 25th March to the 1st April. Auditions are taking place tonight and tomorrow night and we will shortly be able to announce the names of the principals. The show is being directed by Tony Finnegan (who directed our fantastic “Hot Mikado” in 2004) who is joined by Musical Director Sarah Lynch, while Michael Evans is the twinkle toed choreographer who will be directing our dance steps. Interest in the show is phenomenal and tickets will be like gold dust next March!
Next week the Society are hosting a Table Quiz in Manzor's Village Inn. Quiz-Master for the night is our own Eamonn Rogers, who will no doubt have his usual teasers that will both entertain and drive people crazy, trying to remember the answers! It promises to be a good night. Tables of four cost €20.
