World Youth Day
Welcome home to all of our young people who attended World Youth Day in Cologne, by all accounts it was a wonderful experience for the Group. They return among us renewed in body and spirit with plenty of gifts and talents to share in our parish community. The next World Youth Day takes place in Sydney, Australia in 2008.
On Sunday 14th of August, 130 young people along with Bishop Jim Moriarty will leave the Diocese for World Youth Day, Cologne, Germany.
The pilgrimage will officially start with the 11am Mass in St Brigid's parish Church, Kildare town. The group will travel by bus and boat all the way to Cologne for this historic event. Approximately one million young people will gather for the event. Pope Benedict will arrive for the event on Thursday, 18th. The group departs Cologne on Sunday 21st, arriving back in Ireland on Monday 22nd August.
We are called to worship him
After six months of preparation, the 20th World Youth Day Celebration is almost here. Young people from all over the world are preparing to gather in Cologne in Germany next Sunday, to answer the call to worship, and to celebrate their faith together.
Our own young people have prepared in many ways, they have been involved in pilgrimage experiences over the spring and summer, they have met with the other people travelling form Kildare & Leighlin, and they have prepared and celebrated the Eucharist together on a number of occasions. They are a very special group of people, ordinary, normal young adults whose faith is important to them. Many of them are already involved in ministry in our parish, and we look forward to the enthusiasm and joy they will bring home from this very special experience.
Once again, we are delighted that Clane & Rathcoffey are sending the largest parish delegation form this country, and we wish them all the best as they set off next Sunday. Thank you all for the support you have given to the group during their preparation, and please remember them in your prayers, as they represent us all at this international celebration.

In 1984 Pope John Paul II introduced the idea of a celebration of faith by and for the young people of the world. The events became so popular that they have been run on a regular basis since then. The growth in attendance shows great hope for our church, and great promise from our young people.
World Youth Day brings people aged 17—30 together to celebrate, discuss and learn about their faith. In 2002, for the first time, Clane & Rathcoffey parish offered young people the opportunity to attend one of these gatherings. Twenty two pilgrims joined the 1.2 million young people who travelled to Toronto on that occasion, and most of them are still currently actively involved in parish life.
At the closing ceremony in Downsview in Toronto, the Pope invited the young people of the world to come to Cologne in Germany this year for the 20th World Youth Day Celebration.
Once again the youth of our parish have accepted this invitation, and this time twenty-one young pilgrims will travel in response. The theme for this World Youth Day is We are called to worship him. It is a wonderful opportunity for young adults to explore their own faith and to meet others who are committed to faith in their lives. It also gives them a chance to see a much wider picture of the church, with young people from all over the world coming together with a common focus and common beliefs.
The energy, enthusiasm and joy in the huge crowd which will gather in Cologne will be a positive experience for all those who take part, and hopefully the group from our own parish will bring home some of that spirit to enrich our own community here in Clane & Rathcoffey.
